SAMUEL OLAIDE AYODEJI ADENUBI

Dr Deji Adenubi passed away peacefully, aged 83, on 27 August. He was an active and fiercely independent man who played squash, lifted weights and maintained his engineering consultancy well into his dotage. He also continued to satisfy his curiosity for the world by travelling to places like Turkey, Libya, Jamaica and the Panama Canal in his later years.

Dr Adenubi fell seriously ill in 2021 and the family wishes to thank all the friends and colleagues from the various stages of his personal and professional life – Igbobi College, Kings College, Manchester University, Stanford University, University of Lagos and at Intertech Associates – who offered support and shared stories of how he helped and inspired them at critical stages in their lives. He is survived by his wife Mobolaji and two children Kemi and Muyiwa as well as his grandchildren Yemisi and Deji.

Any expressions of sympathy, or gifts for the family may be forwarded through:

For me there is only one Uncle Deji in the whole world. He was my mum's brother and he was exceptional. Uncle Deji had all the answers to all the problems of this world. He was always there for us. Whenever l went crying to his office, l came out with a smile and a solution . He was never tired of availing himself with a great sense of humor, he was articulate and firm in his approach towards life which l admired so much about him . Rest in perfect peace , Will definitely miss you.

I got to know doctor through my sister Tope Hayes (Nee Adekoya) who you took as a daughter and since the day you met us, we became your family. You were a great father who does not only take care of your biological children but many of us that our paths crossed yours. Your support financially and morally throughout my university education can never be forgotten. Your generosity cannot be compare to any, you are such an amazing father to many of us. Thank you for how you fathered us despite that you do not know our biological father. I personally have strong conviction that you can never miss heaven. Rest on till we meet again to part no more.

Dr Samuel Olaide Ayodeji Adenubi, Doc as I fondly call him is a Father figure to me. I met him shortly after my secondary education in 1989 while working in the same building where his office was. He encouraged me to return to school and monitored my progress until I graduated. When I had to do my industrial attachment, he ensured I secured a place with his sister, Mrs Aderonke Fetuga. He also got me my first job with Dr Dade Sadare after graduation. Some of my siblings and friends were also beneficiaries of his largesse. Doc's laughter was contagious which helped to cure stress. He was a very straight forward human who will tell you point blank how it was. He was generous and cared so much about all and sundry. He was always out to ensure others' comfort irrespective of their background. When I relocated to Abuja years later after I got married, he will call regularly to check on my wellbeing, my husband and children and will specifically said: "tell lagbaja he cannot afford not to take care of my daughter or else I will fight him". I will miss some of his regular slogan, such as: "Ba mi ki lagbaja" "Olodo ni e" "Alakori, se o mo pe o ye ki o pe mi" The slogans above were not meant to hurt anyone in anyway 'cause of the way he used the phrases and at the end, he would laugh his heart out over it. I pray that God will comfort the entire family including us, all his adopted children. Rest in Peace Doc SOA.

Dr was a blunt, but down to earth person. He had a strong mindset on whatever he believes in. Such attitude is real nowadays. May Almighty GOD grant his soul eternal rest. Amen. My condolences goes to his children.

I have many fond memories of Uncle Deji, perhaps the most being him always being extremely on time for any appointment (taught me a thing or too!) and his very precise handwriting…glad I kept the last note he sent me. His laughter was also legendary!!!! In the last few years, he supported our late Dad in maintaining the infrastructure at Moronu and I was often part of their 5

I’m sure Uncle ‘Deji would sit down from time to time, but I don’t remember ever seeing him do this, at least never for very long. Not even in his famously cluttered office, or if you were lucky, he ever decided to breeze through your wedding/birthday/random celebratory event. I also don’t remember him ever talking down to me; even when I was a child and didn’t know much or when I was much more grown up and occasionally proved that I knew less. I don’t remember any of his many phone calls that lasted more than a minute. (It is possible that some of his physical visits may have been that brief as well.) I DO remember how he was effectively our ‘Emergency Management Agency.’ No problem was too big or too small, he would fix it or help you fix it or call you ‘Alakọri’ for not getting him involved from the start and then fix it. I DO remember how he showed love; how he was always there for us, in a way that is all too rare. I DO remember his all-over-body laugh, the one that would have him slapping his thighs and wiping away tears. The man could laugh with his soul. We will miss him sorely, but we are many. Together, perhaps we can try and help Aunty Bọlaji, Kẹmi, Muyiwa and each other cope with his leaving.

Dr Adenubi (fondly called Baba Kemo by myself and my siblings), was my brother in law but also a brother. Each time he came to the UK, he would call one of us and then the message was passed on. When he came in 2021, he called individually and it was unusual. A couple of us called and suggested we meet up later and he said when he returned in new year 2022. We thank God for having known him and what he impacted. May his gentle soul rest in peace, Amen 🙏

Dr S O Adenubi(Deji) was a spiritual brother to me. We met in 1959 when he came to KC from Igbobi College for his HSC and I was in 5th form . He helped me with my Physics regularly till he left for Norwich during the long vacation. Soon after I got to England the following Spring he wrote me to remind me of the need to work on my Physics. After med school I went to Canada and NY and Deji went to Stanford. On returning to Lagos,Deji and Bolaji took us on and got us settled until we decided to return to North America. Deji helped me and my family as much as humanly possible. I’m lost without him. I’m reminded of the poetry “The glories of our blood and state are shadows not substantial things, there’s no armor against fate”……We must remember to pray for him always as Lord Tennyson and most scripture affirms. May his soul rest in peace.

Deji was a great friend. His transparent sincerity, his incredible generosity, his infectious joviality, his optimism, his meticulous punctuality at occasions and events, his scientific knowledge and curiosity, his love of music and the arts…………… - all this and more, had a strong positive impact on my own life. Losing him is beyond sadness; it is absolute anguish.

A TRIBUTE TO DR. SAMUEL OLAIDE AYODEJI ADENUBI ALIAS IBADI ARAN.   We write this tribute with mixed feelings, with sorrow for his passing and thanksgiving to God for calling him to eternal rest; a rest rightly deserved, because he has earned it after his labour on this Earth.   Our friendship started from childhood and it was truly harmonious through our journey of life, when he earned the nick name “Ibadi Aran”.   At various stages of our lives, our families were moved closer together, thereby becoming a “lasting Treasure” to one-another. His death as such is not the death of love, the great gift of love still remains. It heals and gives life even in his absence.   We pray that our relationship and the bond of love established between our two families be strengthened. For where the treasure is, there also will heart be.   May God grant his wife  Bolaji, his children and the entire Adenubi families the fortitude to bear his demise and may God console them.   Eternal rest grant unto him O’ Lord, and let perpetual light shine on him. May his soul rest in peace. Amen.
